The sound of skin - we take for our own less proper hours to deliver these silent blows against the tanned leather. There, inside the empty room, one hears the muffled sound of drumsticks that violently penetrate the walls of this house. We hear the words continually flying over the tape and we remember what brought us here. And there is neither sun nor sunset. There are neither clouds nor moon, nor stars. There is a silence that lasts in all, but that does not belong here. The sound of the skin is a scream that is not muffled and neither is it a rant. It is an endless number of words that call redemption from our body. That wanted to be heard but that only will be entitled to the bang that cradles the minutes and seconds kneading by the door of what we allow.

With four (pairs of) hands - Here, in the hills of S. Mamede, we work from sun to sun ... or is it from moon to moon?! It’s that we constantly lose track of time! Some other day we will show you the natural beauty that we have for a neighborhood out there, but today is the day for you to know a little more of the organized chaos that is our home studio. Wednesday was a break day from recording to prepare the next concerts. The days have been of four pairs of hands, even when only one instrument is heard in the studio, even when one of us went down to the town to buy fresh bread; even though only one is at the helm of sinusoidal waves and harpoons of sounds. O violino [Recording Sessions]

Inspira. Expira… (alguém espera alguém no cais) … Respira.
Susana

The violin - The muscles are warm and they crack the ripe wood. You you have fingers and ears. Did you trim your nails so that the strings would cut your fingers more easily? Relax, Breathe. The music is not born out of the fingers, much less in these songs. It’s to the heart that you owe allegiance. Wait, but is the heart not a muscle? So close your eyes and concentrate on one point, focus, zoom, and then gently let everything be diffuse, unto perfection. Your memory is the resonance box more than perfect of these songs, so breathe. You read once more all that should be forgotten; you burn what you should have kept and you clean once more the resin that clings to the strings. What is your dream after all? You must answer fast, avoid using words! There are so many voices in this vessel, as many as the truth that insists in singing and burning your fingers. The only artifice is your fear. Calm down, this is not your violin. It’s been a long time since the Boatman took it. For a long time the wolf has been watching over its sleep. The new shore might give you back that what you seek, so before the next click of the metronome, inhale, exhale … (someone is waiting in the pier) … breathe. Susana

A permissão [05.03.2011 Tocha]

The permission - For how long I have missed the floor where secrets are told without a half-voice. With the rain tearing at the road that tooks us to Tocha, we returned to the stage from where he had been absent since October. We whisper the new songs because it is not yet time to tear them from our chests. Maybe just one... I remembered of Britain, where some of them were first presented. I suppose it's the way it goes from here. From time to time we remember where they were first played. Like My Funny Valentine in Italy. With the passing of time, the memories shape themselves to what we allow of them.

Respirar Debaixo D'Água - After a week wrapped up in guitar strings and others that we have delivered to the tape, it was time for a brief interlude, back to an old promise that finally happened: doing the live music of the movie "Respirar Debaixo D'Água" of Antonio Ferreira at the Teatro Académico Gil Vicente. So, sitting on stage next to a screen that lit up the strings and keys, we colored the film with other sounds that Antoio did not even imagined when he created it. There was a curious feeling of uniqueness in this venture, where each note was thought, timed and felt, to present our vision of the film on stage. Thank you Antonio.

The swing- the days are of small hours when you abandon all that belongs to you. They say time is of oblivion when he has pleasure for his brother. Maybe so, but he changes you when you go through him without the due vassalage – and of little value is the laughter that you may forget in that transfiguration of yourself. It’s just that the laughable of your abandonment is an unfortunate substitute of love. So, this little less than nothing of a present is what we have left before we deliver it to a past that will be memory and fiber of what we will be in a matter of instants. This slow swing of the train carriage that leaves from Portalegre is what I am, or what I was moments ago; I wouldn’t even remember it if not for the ink, but we can’t always choose what is ours to eternalize – in truth little are the offerings that we deliver with goodwill to our memory – and even less are the one that complete this miserable patchwork quilt. And here I follow in the swing of this carriage, by the window where the day is slowly replacing the night’s torpor. Behind I leave João P. Miranda and Alexandre Nobre: my brave companions in this venture; also, little do we choose whom we elect to sit by our side, by the abyss – but sometimes that misfortune is an unexpected luck. It is what this mist that rises from the dry grass of Alentejo tells me. It’s what this sudden rise of the day confides me while I do all I can to step away from the surrender of the heart to a tape that can return it. There are no words that can describe the moment when you find of the eternity of a chord. There are no words.

This labyrinth - We lose track of the hours and days ando f the ties that bind us to what we were before we came here. And I keep tearing the words from the books where I once I did keep them, for I could no longer be their home – and the helmsman, occupied with the knots of this labyrinth, accompanies them until their silence is less than memory. I return now to the cold of this room where in a few moments the light will be too much for the forgetfulness of these eyes. Joao Rui

5:52 [Recording Sessions]

5:52 - The day is only over when the shadow of the chords finds its path through the night. One by one, the instruments return to their shelter – and part of me is also finding place in those wooden boxes, waiting not to return. – what are your fingers afraid of? They who knew your fingers so well, as your prayers. We throw our tired body to the cold of the sheets, a little before the day returns to the same light which we traded for a bit of eternity. And now, at this hour when you find your way here, not really knowing why, you will only find the last breath of these hours that forgot to leave. Joao Rui

O segredo do eco [Recording Sessions]

The secret of the echo - Inside this empty room where the microphones are thirsty for the past, you hear everything a bit more than you should: the ill contained breathing, the muffled laughter that insists on not letting go of this vessel and the sigh of the heart for knowing exactly where it will have to look to relive the emotion the microphone yearns. So all we can do is abandon time and pray that in each successive take the heart withstands the return to its executioner. Each song has a secret - and within it there are others who, not being his lieges they are also not his peers; certain of their condition, they accompany his step until they turn into his echo. In this empty room you can hear everything - a little more than you should.

Quem me dera não te esquecer.
João Rui

The wind of Portus Alacer - The rain insists on tucking our every step. One hears the rumor of its arrival sprinkling in the window from where the memory of other days returns. And there is a wind that blows through the small grass that comes from I don’t know where up to the door of the studio. Maybe it's the laughter of which you’ve been told of when your face was but the promise of the stranger’s eyes that look upon you from the mirror. He hides among the pages of this book and looks at me as though as if it were me a lifetime from now, with so many broken promises between the lines where he was certainty of infinity. We go around in circles in this house looking for a certainty that within a couple of years will be an abused memory. How I wish I would not forget you. João Rui

A noite ruidosa [Recording Sessions]

The noisy night - The days are constantly too small to uncover so many secrets. And if the sun does not invite us to the windows where the cold found its home, her sister also refuses us passage. So we run after ideas that fall in love too easily by the noise of the night: the fog that clings to the door of our loneliness and imprisons us again in this room that will keep so many echoes that dreamed they were no longer secrets. We hear the whispering voice from the other side of this delirium that accompanies us through night, until it gets diluted in the impossible shadows of the morning. But impossible is the dream being the only truth I know. João Rui

A coincidência do take certo [Recording Sessions]

The coincidence of the correct take – Nothing but coincidence influences the recording of each song. Capturing the correct take is like trying to trap a bird of rare beauty that lingered in your room pretending oblivion. It is then necessary to briefly abandon the mechanics of the arms and lift the veil that hides the first emotion of the moment of creation. And each one of us seeks the emotion that takes us back to the first heartbeat that unveiled the song - and there are not so many roads that give us back this gift. The eyes deviate to the wrinkles of our clothing, to the frame of the windows and the memory surrenders herself to salvage what was lost in the speed of the hours - and in the return of that darkness, the instruments find their way on to the tape if our arms don’t hold them back. So it is the coincidence of emotion and technique meeting for a brief instant what we try to imprison in the studio. João Rui

O que povoa estas músicas? [Recording Sessions]

A música quer à força sair destas paredes.

© Sofia Silva

It turns out that the dawning comes too late and the night is nowhere enough for hellos or goodbyes. Fiercely, the music wants to leave these walls. The beat, whether from the drums or from the rain, leads an ancient march, one much busier. I fill the silent spaces with small frames the landscape: the dog who says it’s home, the furniture that invites you to inhabit and the remnants of an age of devotion to another, where we would abdicate the conduct of our lives. To whom will they hand in that role now? Who are the gentlemen who populate these songs? And Manel, José and Jerónimo of whom we speak now, they slide through the forest, stealing heads, dethroning statues, building altars. There are spaces like this where each platform is a house, a potential invitation to the truth; come a tear, a cry, a prayer, whatever it is that arrives when it gets heres will not realize it has just entered.

Three months of silence - I promised silence to lose myself in amidst the ruins of memory. And wherever I turned, everything around was darkness. I plunged into the abyss of black waters so murky of their clarity. There I stood in silence, for time does not forgive the careless wander in the labyrinths of the memory. And I swore not to return while the words written in misaligned sheets had not found place in our boat. It was time; the hour of retiring to the Blue House, to return to the long due heart. Again we chose the winter for this venture - perhaps it's intensity of the cold outside, the reason why we do not realize of this other that flows through us. The one who looks at you from time to time through the cracks of your heart and whispers "where have you lost yourself?". So in fact we're not coming back from three months of deep silence, but from almost two years of a certain silence. Now that the songs are complete, we are left with the alchemy of committing them to the magnetism of the tape. Thus we left the Blue House with all the instruments we kept, towards the colder slopes of Portalegre, where we took João P. Miranda, the helmsman of this venture waited. It is not time to reveal neither the name nor the body of this album, but here we will tell you of the days we spent telling secrets in an empty room. João Rui

Bom dia, 2011!!!

Bom dia 2011!!!! :D

a Jigsaw - Crow Covered Tree (On The Road / Bolzano)

Video by Morgan Silvestri [ Ora/Bolzano (Italia) 2010 ]

Crow Covered Tree

I remember I woke to find me sitting at the end of the bed
My fingers were calm and resting under my chin
My hands had been waiting to wake me from the strangest dream.
A looming thought was lurking in my head
Dr. Death had come to visit us again
With my lungs tangled in my thoughts, I leaned back against the pillow
I would make my way back to sleep once more

It won’t take too much time to find out that the bones you break
It won’t take too much time to find out that the bones you break are the least

I found myself in the same dream from where I had left a lifetime ago
I was sitting at the end of the bed, waiting for me to wake up
Thinking how I would break him the news
We’re going around, we’re going around in circles
How could I ask you even more?

It won’t take too much time to find out that the bones you break
It won’t take too much time to find out that the bones you break
And time if anything as been my good friend in this
And time if anything as been turning around,
turning around until I break

The crow covered tree outside the room
The crow covered tree outside the room
The crow covered tree outside the room
Had been asleep for days

a Jigsaw - Like The Wolf (Live On The Road / London)

Video: Sofia Silva (Londres,UK, Setembro 2010)

And now I stare, I stare into the emptiness
With roses wrapped around my ankles from moving too slow
Like a wave that broke too soon
And so she told me to stop right there
In your hands? Said I, with a hint of grief
Without a hint of truth
Isn’t irony such a good friend?

And what you see is not who I am (there were surely thunders)
What the devil doesn’t take it’s for god to claim
I’m like the wolf, riding through the night
I’m like the wolf, running up the hill

Have you lost your senses child?
I have tried, and tried to be somebody else
A sheep’s skin, a lamb’s tail and a bell (funny it didn’t work)
so I walked for a while, like peter the fool,
Stumbling across my old prayers
Isn’t irony a surprising friend

And what you see is not who I am (there were surely thunders)
What the devil doesn’t take it’s for god to claim
And this is not quite what you expected
Like I am not what I wanted for me
I’m like the wolf, riding through the night
I’m like the wolf, running up the hill
Isn’t irony such a good friend?

a Jigsaw - Down The Willow's Bed (Live On The Road)

Video: Sofia Silva (Lisboa, Julho 2010)

he woke up at dawn, he woke up at dawn with his ribs pressed against his heart,
into the dark.
I am what's left of a dream I had, a secret that I did not hear quite right
Oh the endless roads, from where my feet stands
and there is a smile at the end of every one, but not for me

Because the rain knows my name, she knows where i'm living
and she told my nightmares, where I'm hiding, hiding
Down the willow's bed, Down the willow's bed

So I took one of them, the one that sang "my dear heart"
and I walked, and I crawled over the years,
To an empty space, an empty, empty space
And so I stopped to stare at the buildings where they were advertising your absence,
my dear heart, my dear heart
see this girl, she could tell a lie better than me, better than me

Because the rain knows my name, she knows where I'm living
and she told my nightmares, that I'm bleeding, bleeding
Down the willow's bed, Down the willow's bed
Down the willow's bed, Down the willow's bed

Regressar a casa.

Returning home. Sometimes it happens - Without rain or cold, with the sun forgotten of so much light, we move across the road that binds these two countries: the one I bring in my chest and the other that the road stole from me all these days. João Rui

A ilusão do riso (Monkey Week ii/ii) [11.10.2010 Cádiz - Espanha]

At this hour of my life, I can’t tell the difference between the ilusion of being here from the absence of your eyes.

O temporal de Cadiz (Monkey Week i/ii) [10.10.2010 Cádiz - Espanha]

O Riso vai crescendo à medida que o café me devolve a humanidade.
O estrondo do público é impressionante. O riso do Angel já se ouve… Cadiz.
Gracias guapos!
João Rui
The Storm of Cadiz (Monkey Week i/ii) - Another long trip to which I succumb in the middle of the night while we were escaping the Mouth Of The Wolf (Boca Del Lobo). The sun that greeted us had other intentions, but it was the first to smile with our arrival at the festival "Monkey Week." Tsunami Music’s David and our three Grocdogs (Elena, Dani and Marti) were already waiting for us at the cafe. The laughter grows as the coffee brings me back my humanity. But rain threatens the falls this day. The square of the outdoor stage begins to gather more people, just as the sky gathering all the clouds over us. But when the wolf goes on stage, not a drop of rain is about its pace. The roar of the audience is impressive. I can hear Angel’s laughter.. Cadiz. Very late, at night, while I confessed our luck with the absence of rain during our concert, I heard an unfamiliar voice who told me "It was the tension of your music that kept the rain from falling.Incredible! " I fall asleep grateful to the giant "Yeah" that the square returned us... Gracias guapos!

João RuiDe perdidos al rio - I hear the bones snapping with the weight of each day, with each string that breaks, with each tuning peg that gives in or with the skin of the adufe that tears apart. I imagine that this is the way of the road to remind us that we only half of our heart within our chest. But today, in La Boca del Lobo in Madrid with the “No More Coins For The Jukebox” is was as though as if we were at home.

And through the rain, at last Sebastião - When it begins raining here like this, no one knows when it will end. It's the storm that they warned me of.But there are eyes that cannot distinguish a short drive from the madness of going through walls of water. And so, in an embrace that break our bones Sebastião appeared to us, here in Pontevedra, so far from home. With the eyes of one who goes to all storms. Good to see that courage in you. João Rui

Pontevedra 08.10.2010

Benjamin Sachs [07.10.2010 A Coruña - Espanha]

João RuiBenjamin Sachs – We’re surrounding the roads back home: now from the north, in a Coruña, where we find Luis Moro, Lucia and Pepe, who immediately make us their own. We are from everywhere without being from anywhere - Jorri and I lift up the veil of the stage and become part of the Tribeca band of Luis Moro, banjo and harmonium in hand, just to make the song "Benjamin Sachs" even darker. After the silence, we set the fire to the stage with the promise of return. João Rui

A Coruña 07.10.2010

A beginning of a sentence, a laughter, a handful of nothing. A fire inside the chest.)

Zaragoza 05.10. 2010

Thank you Damien.
João Rui

(Damien Jurado)
Zaragoza, the song of the wretched - Not always, but sometimes there are songs that make us throw everything away. Treasures that go so softly into the heart just to break it afterwards - and as if there was still something there untouched when silence takes over, we hear the song again. And again. And again. Maybe it’s because we like to hear it break, or maybe for it reminds us of the cracks of our throne. The wolf, who is also part of Damien Jurado and Sarah, as they are part of him, found the tears that were expecting him today. Thank you Damien. João Rui

Fingi que não a conhecia.

Madrid 03.10.2010

Nós seguimos rumo a Donostia.

Andoni, Nicolas & June [03.10.2010 Madrid - Espanha]

João RuiAndoni, Nicolas & June – We bring the rain with us to the streets of Madrid, up to where our eyes flew over her in a terrace under the rain. Andoni told me that the wind woke up with strange eyes for in his back was travelling the water of other clouds – Nico tells me in a smile that he will be the first to receive her with his flag of victory (such courage in his feathers). June whispered me silently like the wind of the sea: if this silence was another, without eyes trying to find me, I would sing with you. My three angels. As if it was the porch of the Den, without the stage or noise, we went back to the heart of each song. João Rui

A vencedora do Passatempo Antena 3!!

Neste Festival tocaram quatro bandas portuguesas - a Jigsaw, The Soaked Lamb, Sean Riley and The Slowriders e Corsage - que belo cardápio!

João RuiThe fever of Bilbao - I return to the first pages of the black notebook to meet with what the memory lost in the meanwhile. Because we've been here before. Yes,the Basque Country, on the 12th of August when we were travelling from Malaga to Guingamp. We stopped for a while in San Sebastian by the rough sea of two in the morning. Perhaps it was four. I do not remember because the night was a mantle so thick above the ocean waves...Today is another light and temperature that receive us, but the lack of time is equal. Showcase in the center of Bilbao in the late afternoon and an evening concert at night, at Fever Club. What is this fever that comes to see of us in between songs?

– Like the two sides of a selfish dice, we cannot deliver one of the sides to the green carpet of the table. So we jump from town to town as if the following could be the redemption of the previous. If the morning is of Zürich, the afternoon is already of other sightings. In Bern, we parted briefly, near the train station that takes me to Fribourg for a Showcase at Fnac. But shortly after, I return in the same train, half crumpled from dancing with the wolf. The landscape, even faster, in a steady pace almost lets me fall asleep back to Bern. I’m still sitting on the subway in Hamburg, though the window tells me another story framed in a landscape that is so far. We’re expected in the dungeon of Ono in Bern, where the eyes of Moscow came to see us in another delirium of the stage. It is again time to go? We return to the road with no time to rest because we’re being called upon by the distant voices of Barcelona. What late hour…

The boiling point - It's somewhere when you lose control of the vessel that you can predict, for a moment, the certainty that the keel will break right in your hands. Zurich receives us in a smile that wrapped up himself with the sun and strolls down on the riverbanks.

Crossing the English Channel – It’s three in the morning and everything around is iron that bends with the violence of the sea. Gnashing of teeth of a boat used to cross the English Channel. It’s swinging with the cold you hear on the bow, where the low light of this vessel tears the night for a brief moment. We came through another fog to get to Liverpool, plagued by memories of what you do not want to leave behind. What silence... From this table where my notebook swings, perhaps more than the boat, I still hear London, who came to say goodbye at Dover, after hearing the wolf at The Cavendish Arms. João Rui
