João RuiDe perdidos al rio - I hear the bones snapping with the weight of each day, with each string that breaks, with each tuning peg that gives in or with the skin of the adufe that tears apart. I imagine that this is the way of the road to remind us that we only half of our heart within our chest. But today, in La Boca del Lobo in Madrid with the “No More Coins For The Jukebox” is was as though as if we were at home.

And through the rain, at last Sebastião - When it begins raining here like this, no one knows when it will end. It's the storm that they warned me of.But there are eyes that cannot distinguish a short drive from the madness of going through walls of water. And so, in an embrace that break our bones Sebastião appeared to us, here in Pontevedra, so far from home. With the eyes of one who goes to all storms. Good to see that courage in you. João Rui

Pontevedra 08.10.2010

Benjamin Sachs [07.10.2010 A Coruña - Espanha]

João RuiBenjamin Sachs – We’re surrounding the roads back home: now from the north, in a Coruña, where we find Luis Moro, Lucia and Pepe, who immediately make us their own. We are from everywhere without being from anywhere - Jorri and I lift up the veil of the stage and become part of the Tribeca band of Luis Moro, banjo and harmonium in hand, just to make the song "Benjamin Sachs" even darker. After the silence, we set the fire to the stage with the promise of return. João Rui

A Coruña 07.10.2010

(The wandering of the hours and days - What did you keep from today?
A beginning of a sentence, a laughter, a handful of nothing. A fire inside the chest.)

Thank you Damien.
João Rui

(Damien Jurado)
Zaragoza, the song of the wretched - Not always, but sometimes there are songs that make us throw everything away. Treasures that go so softly into the heart just to break it afterwards - and as if there was still something there untouched when silence takes over, we hear the song again. And again. And again. Maybe it’s because we like to hear it break, or maybe for it reminds us of the cracks of our throne. The wolf, who is also part of Damien Jurado and Sarah, as they are part of him, found the tears that were expecting him today. Thank you Damien. João Rui

Madrid 03.10.2010

Nós seguimos rumo a Donostia.

Andoni, Nicolas & June [03.10.2010 Madrid - Espanha]

João RuiAndoni, Nicolas & June – We bring the rain with us to the streets of Madrid, up to where our eyes flew over her in a terrace under the rain. Andoni told me that the wind woke up with strange eyes for in his back was travelling the water of other clouds – Nico tells me in a smile that he will be the first to receive her with his flag of victory (such courage in his feathers). June whispered me silently like the wind of the sea: if this silence was another, without eyes trying to find me, I would sing with you. My three angels. As if it was the porch of the Den, without the stage or noise, we went back to the heart of each song. João Rui

A vencedora do Passatempo Antena 3!!

Neste Festival tocaram quatro bandas portuguesas - a Jigsaw, The Soaked Lamb, Sean Riley and The Slowriders e Corsage - que belo cardápio!

João RuiThe fever of Bilbao - I return to the first pages of the black notebook to meet with what the memory lost in the meanwhile. Because we've been here before. Yes,the Basque Country, on the 12th of August when we were travelling from Malaga to Guingamp. We stopped for a while in San Sebastian by the rough sea of two in the morning. Perhaps it was four. I do not remember because the night was a mantle so thick above the ocean waves...Today is another light and temperature that receive us, but the lack of time is equal. Showcase in the center of Bilbao in the late afternoon and an evening concert at night, at Fever Club. What is this fever that comes to see of us in between songs?

– Like the two sides of a selfish dice, we cannot deliver one of the sides to the green carpet of the table. So we jump from town to town as if the following could be the redemption of the previous. If the morning is of Zürich, the afternoon is already of other sightings. In Bern, we parted briefly, near the train station that takes me to Fribourg for a Showcase at Fnac. But shortly after, I return in the same train, half crumpled from dancing with the wolf. The landscape, even faster, in a steady pace almost lets me fall asleep back to Bern. I’m still sitting on the subway in Hamburg, though the window tells me another story framed in a landscape that is so far. We’re expected in the dungeon of Ono in Bern, where the eyes of Moscow came to see us in another delirium of the stage. It is again time to go? We return to the road with no time to rest because we’re being called upon by the distant voices of Barcelona. What late hour…

Crossing the English Channel – It’s three in the morning and everything around is iron that bends with the violence of the sea. Gnashing of teeth of a boat used to cross the English Channel. It’s swinging with the cold you hear on the bow, where the low light of this vessel tears the night for a brief moment. We came through another fog to get to Liverpool, plagued by memories of what you do not want to leave behind. What silence... From this table where my notebook swings, perhaps more than the boat, I still hear London, who came to say goodbye at Dover, after hearing the wolf at The Cavendish Arms. João Rui

London of Blue [25.09.2010 Londres - UK]

London of Blue - After running the streets of London, the Westminster, Piccadilly Circus, it was time to send the the Wolf down the Old Ford Road. Samantha, who occupied today the the empty chair of Becky Lee in "Return To Me" was the one who first opened the curtains of the stage with the gospel of her voice. From the bottom of the Room, Blue was smiling like all the shades of the night. The blues make him smile even more. Patrick Wheeland and his entourage then moved through the night with careful steps: one could guess the howls that had been looking for us... But before the flood, about mid-afternoon, my twelve-string blues were waiting for me smiling as I was leaving Denmark Street.Happy like a mouse.

Arrivals & Departures III - There are moments from which we never depart. Reference of memory? Or maybe it’s the case of when the blood goes with more violence through the heart. Such a force that it feels that this time it will break. But you move forward to wherever it is, always with that crow on your shoulder - and it will never leave your bloodstream; as part of you. And in this way, I'm forever sitting on the metro of Hamburg, with the light from time to time invading my eyes.

Hoje sou eu o convidado do Thomas e dos rapazes dos My Pony, My Rifle And Me na sua grande canção “Your Pa Fought With John Brown”.
João RuiThe Port of Hamburg - There is a mist that does not turn into fog or rain, along the docks of the port of Hamburg. And every time we escape from our house, we are received by that moisture does not cool our bones. We cut the wind to the metro and we move through underground passages around the roots of this city. We escape the fog, wind and rain but we didn’t see the smile of the sun. Then night falls on the shadow of the Mobile Blues Club. Today I am the guest of Thomas and the boys of My Pony, My Rifle And Me in their great song "Your Pa Fought With John Brown."

Where is the Central Station?

1939 - If the night was a dream of six strings, the morning was even deeper: as the blade of the heart, to give me the rest of the poison that awaited me in boxes wrapped in old leather.1968, 1964, 1963, 1951... But my heart stopped in 1939... My God... how many years I did wait to hear this sound that echoes through the timber and which is a murmur that penetrates the skin, like the sea from Italy. We continue to Liège (Belgium) with the chest overflowing. Without time. Always without time to see everything we wanted. We entered the Shamrock to drunk the ones who where waiting and we go back into the night. I’m still in 1939. João Rui

O covil tão longe do mar [13.09.2010 Bakhuizen - Holanda]

Halfway – The road continues to the north, to Antwerp to return the hand that we took from here. They told me that this is the last day of summer in Belgium, which explains the strange smile one wears in the face when dealing with a farewell. So we got home, to accompany the summer to the gates of the rain. It's time for wolves. But the sands of the hourglass of time is not on our way, because we’re being called by the tidal waves that caress Rotterdam. I’ll come back soon, as if I was walking in circles around you without finding you the time. And then we look for the “Exit”, where the night turned into a howl. Curious how in the last two days the wolf’s howl lived in four different countries. A fugitive. And we have not even reached half way of the space that we need to walk to find the other silence. We continue to find new travel companions, like Herr Dr. Joseph Dops. Pity I do not have for the time that I have left. João Rui

Herr Dubliner [09.09.2010 Offenburg - Alemanha]

A mim trouxe-me um sorriso.
Thank You Jonathan
João Rui Herr Dubliner – We meet again the smile of Claudia Fleischner in Mulhouse and the one of Jean Pierre. The smile of a whole town that one more recognized the chords we brought from so far away. Like Zé and Len, that came from our sea still with our sun in their skin. But today we have no time to let the French smiles ripen. We return to the Vaterland, Offenburg, south of Germany where Heidi opened for us the doors of The Dubliner, where Pascal was waiting for us by the piano. It’s like Gary says: I’m in love with the surprise of the road. You never know what the night is going to bring for us. For me, she brought a smile. Obrigado Jonathan.

João RuiArrivals & Departures II – If yesterday it was the rain that received us, today that was yesterday condensed in just a few hours is but a threatening sky that has been looking upon us. He followed us to the doors of Paris only to brush our eyes when the two smiles that came with us had to leave our side.
Or a smile and the promise of another.

João RuiI’ll never see this sunset again - I’m still lost in marble. We descend from Volterra in increasingly tight circles until we’re able to part our eyes from the flags that swirled around the bodies of shadow. To Firenze, to know what is of that wind that calls us upon her. We run from church to church for the faith that in one of these, our heart will be torn apart. That’s what the wind told me. But it occurred to me once more, that after your eyes know the dream that is the measure of all that follows and precedes it, then your prayers should become silent. Or cautious. For if not, anguish will be thy bread and wine your solitude. If I am a stranger in that temple, let me beg the silence that will be promised to me or let me believe in the lie the wind offered me. Wherever I lost you, I’m yet to find your forgiveness. João Rui

Toscana Medieval

Idiot Smile (Live On The Road)

Video: Sofia Silva (Lisboa, Julho 2010)

So I sat and I waited, patiently for the years to pass
with the violence of each day, of each coming day
When they thought I was running away,
I was merely gathering speed
I was merely gathering speed my friend
I did my best to avoid you
I made all efforts not to see her
my silence says too much
has shades of absence and the wrecks of your touch
Has your breath stopped lately?
do you not see it clear?
the life you knew laughs from the window
oh Idiot smile where have you gone to?
trust not the devil when your hands are clear
I'll tell the truth for once, this time;
My lies have aged to perfection
Oh my euphoria has its nerve in you
Oh my euphoria has its nerve in you
Has your breath stopped lately?
do you not see it clear?
the life you knew laughs from the window
oh Idiot smile where have you gone to?
trust not the devil when your hands are clear
Oh my euphoria has its nerve in you
Oh my euphoria has its nerve in you

Uno

The Old Prison - I still hear your voice telling me how Rome could not be conquered. She must be seduced. But what is this secret of the disquiet of the heart that so quickly forgets how to lead this dance? So nothing remains for me but waiting in front of her for the moment when my chest will break? Because I know it will break. I return to the February streets where the smiles that received us when cold was our companion still live. Each alveolus expands and turns to be the first to perish with the violence of this fire that is searching a home in me. But alas I leave. I leave because I haven’t learned to recognize my eyes that were already living here (In truth one can never leave from here). We head north to Santarcangelo di Romagna where the walls of the old prison were waiting for us. And he made space for the breath of the wolf in his memories of ancient centuries. And like before, outside the prison walls, the voices and laughter echoed through the rest Italy. How I will feel your absence… João Rui

il Mare

Queria despedir-me deste mar.

il Mare – I wanted to say goodbye from this sea. To leave him my goodbye and the certainty of return. But the voice that runs over the maritime plain won’t allow it: if to you I do not speak it is for my voice vanishes in love with yours. Joao Rui

Ora, Itália 29.08.2010

Antes de partir.
Tempo ainda para o almoço no jardim, pelas mãos do Maquinista. Grelhada mista, gulosa reminiscência do nosso país...
A certeza do regresso a Ora atenua as saudades...
Obrigado, Morgan! :)
Susana

Ora, Italy 29.08.2010 - Before leaving. Still time for lunch in the garden, by the hands of the Machinist. A Grilled barbecue, a famished reminiscent of our country ... Tickets in hand, we smile to our next destination, which is on the other side of Italy, on the heel of the boot. A very long journey that will last all night awaits for us, so we part at the the time the sun sets. The certainty of a return diminishes the longing for Ora ... Thank you, Morgan! :) Susana

Regresso esperado…
João Rui
A season in the smile - We leave from a deserted city as if we left anything behind. As if it was possible. We are too human for such a venture and the maximum we allow ourselves to is pretend forgetfulness. Pretend forgetfulness. We move in the direction of Davos with the constant threat of rain and if we want its absence, what is there for us is to ascend to the clouds that invite us to the ground. Above the clouds, the Alps, where we slip back into Italy. Incredible rock carpets and green-life make the fire mist that seems to hamper them from violence. The trip could well have been done in a lost train because the destination is a station where the smile of Morgan is born, our eternal Machinist. He built a stage in the garden where the candles on each table lean to the wind that runs over the lights hanging from the vines that adorn it. Wolves came from the mountains: Stefano Daniela, Paolo, and Umberto ... passengers of this machinist that accompanies us with his steel gaze. An expected return ... João Rui

Ora, Itália 29.08.2010

Manhã em Aur-Ora! :)
Susana

Ora, Itália 29.08.2010 - Morning in Aur-Ora! :) So beautiful! Surrounded by mountains of green and oxygen. The building that now houses the Piccolo Teatro was once a railway station, which gives lots of charm and charisma to this place. It was not by chance that we christened the Morgan Silvestri the Machinist!During the morning there was time to rest and to record some videos "on the road" with the Machinist (who is also a musician) behind and in front of the camera! Who has attended a concert knows that Joao Rui tells many stories and episodes of our tour involving innocuous incidents with police. The Carabinieri in Italy, have a special place in our memories, a very special place near the image of the Bad wolf! : P But in Ora even the Carabinieri are friendly and communicative people, and they agreed to take a group photo with us! : D fantastic! If one day the three of us arrive at a consensus to this effect, we will post here this memorable family photo! ;) Susana
