"Like the Wolf" ouvido por Nuno Ávila :D

Johnny Cash é a referência maior.

“Like The Wolf” foi pensado.

Houve outro pensar.

"Like the Wolf" heard by Nuno Ávila:
"on second album, the a Jigsaw finally find their way. Now, straight and without too many bends. The sound is set: Has as much of folk as of blues. Johnny Cash is the greatest reference.
In "Like The Wolf" the band carries to tape what the trio has been doing while adapting to the road the album "Letters From The Boatman".
The songs have a lot of ground, sometimes more intimate, some more full-blown, with a pinch of an acoustic sound, but where both the violin and the banjo make us walk in the folk American sounds. As a result, the trio give us in this second album a dozen thin-cut crop of songs, but that at the first hearing in the sound are less immediate than the those of the first album. As a result we have an album that becomes more beautiful with each listening. It is a record to taste, full of sublime details. If many like to let the wine breathe and sip with softness, others like to drink all of a stretch. And these are those who are not prepared for such a thin liquid for they may find it difficult to digest. One must give time to time and Let the music flow through our body.
"Like The Wolf" was thought. Came out of the soul. Found Accomplices. High grade for the participation of Becky Lee in the tracks "His Secret" and "Return To Me", where she prints a more sensual air to the music of a Jigsaw. Listening with attentive ears, one notices that on this album the sound of the a Jigsaw is thicker: much thanks to the upright bass and a piano that intertwine in the sound of sweet melodies.
Miro Vaz returns to shine in the production and risks without fear of the recording processes, which fit perfectly to the sound desired by the band.
In "Like The Wolf" there are other processes of creation. There was another thought. The musicians gave themselves differently. João Rui, shapes his voice in order to fit in with the body of the songs. Sometimes he reminds me of Leonard Cohen; he fingerpicks the guitar with soul and makes the banjo cry tunes. Jorri gives body to the sound, sometimes in percussions, sometimes in the upright bass. Susana presents us with her magic violin. But each one of them does not stop there, they go further, much further. This album begins in a lively fashion, particularly with the single "Red Pony"; after briefly gaining a more mousy color, it becomes denser, to come out beautiful and leave as it begins with the sublime "A Little Story." Nice chorus.
Thus, we are faced with an album with strong beliefs, brought by a group that knows what it wants and how to get there. Gone are the days of the sonic guitars. Now it is time to let the wolf howl and to pat him. The doors of the forest are open."

Café-Concerto Torres Novas ::: 7. Março

Dele brotaram músicas ansiosas, reunidas sob um único nome: Like the Wolf.

Aged rose
The boatman’s letters are now tainted with an aged rose colour. The paint has leaked between his journeys and has permeated the ground walked by the a Jigsaws, until eager songs bloomed. These wanted to see the world and were gathered under a single name. They are now part of a Jigsaw’s new album: Like the Wolf. The a Jigsaws came back to us, shaking the water-rain which was still weighting on their shoulders. They licked the slits on their lips caused by the salty seawater. They washed their hands darkened by the earth and bade goodbye to the winter storms. These have challenged their ship while they were in open sea. When they first stepped dry land, there were trees falling over their tracks and the trails were turned into mud. Their eyes had followed the migrant birds. It was still possible to recognize the world’s tonalities on their clothes. Now they are back. The character who gave its name to this album has followed them from afar. Its presence was only felt when the sky darkened and the moon was split into two by its silhouette. At the end of the final journey he came closer. Winter had smoothed his lines, turning them into something familiar. The wolf was longing for a safe place and looked for the a Jigsaws’ company. While he was curled close to Jorri, Susana and João Rui he told plenty of stories. Gradually, the fear was turning into an illusion. The wolf was now a faithful friend, with serene and captivating eyes, happy to survive a harsh winter. He too was longing for the beginning of spring. As soon as the first spring sunrays lighted the earth the a Jigsaws answered the call. They arrived on the 7th of March, when the sun recovered its place. It was in the Teatro Virginia (Torres Novas) where this band dressed themselves with chords extracted from a harmonica and a guitar; from a violin and a keyboard; from a melodica, a harmonium and an upright bass. On the 6th of April, the banjo, the ukulele and the autoharp promise to join this ceremony. After Like the Wolf album’s release, Miro Vaz’s production, Becky Lee’s voice, Miguel’s and Gito’s percussions and upright bass (Soaked Lamb) and Carlos Ramos’ drums (Pluma) will be an illusion, which happened to materialize.

Red Pony (Lyrics)

There are men, begging to be free
Stranded here, against the door
If all of this is real, then the dream is over,
And I, oh my, I am a stranger to you

So what about the moon, it’s mine to steal
So what about the moon, it’s mine to steal, mine to steal, alright!

Red, Red Pony, stand out by my door
Red, Red Pony, stand outside my door, alright

Oh let’s just sing of the old, the good old days
Let’s just bring them back
And hear them on hi-fi stereos

So what about the moon, it’s mine to steal
So what about the moon, it’s mine to steal, mine to steal,
Alright, boys!

Red, Red Pony, stand out by my door
Red, Red Pony, stand outside my door, alright

O Pássaro que alimenta a Alma do Lobo

© Sofia Silva, a Jigsaw, 2009

SofiaSilva

May it be maturity allowing the balance or nature allowing the harmony of man, the eyes of shelter that leads us home will always be denser, an indication of an interior world filled with unexpected events.
This new image is not born of a historical legend, but of the content of an album that makes room for the imaginary.
The letters ceased to be our guide. The ink drains and vanishes and we are left with a subtext where a new body inhabits.
There live the Brothers of Winter, certain they are travelling the path of virtue and of the life of which they do not know the end to. Tracks of desires are spread, to clean the house; holes are excavated, to embed the rind that ceased to be a business card; the souls are raised, so that nature can make use of its freedom.
An image alone that says, as one cries out, to the mature Men, not to be the lie, nor the fear, nor the lack of love, it’s the same that encourages Men to protect themselves from the truth and the naivety with whom one imagine the music in this universe of Wolves and life that blows melancholy.

café concerto :: teatro virgínia :: 7/Março

As canções, sempre as canções.

They have not been in chains, but they haven’t been able not fly. They were not muzzled, but the walls of the blue house are too wide for them to be heard outside (all but for our neighbor Alcides’s chainsaw). The songs, always the songs. The anxiety has been so much from them as it has been ours, but we have reason, they have the madness; if we dream, they are dream itself. Therefore, we have been careful to keep the doors and windows closed ... until last Saturday! We were very well received in Torres Novas, the Café Concert Theater of Virginia, who opened the doors for us and who served a delicious dinner, watered in red. Those who traveled from far to support us again, smiled at distance and timidly, but they were there to hear us. Besides the songs, we took some of our new instruments, the upright bass, the piano, the Cajon, the ukelele. I venture to speak for all and confess that our heart was, that night, a great resonator box!

Somos, antes, a expectativa do significado dessa concretização.

To remember later..

It was a day of photography and finally, the breaking of the rope with the blue house. We began there but we fled. We took two extra members - Paulinha and Miguel, who came to do magic with the wigs and distributed energy. Susana appears as a vision, capable of the metaphysics of a fragile state, Jorri served himself with a a new concept of trust, peaceful, letting himself be guided, and João in a state of grace, sustained with a smile that he cannot avoid.

We are neither an idea nor an image. We are the expectation of the meaning of that achievement. We are the world, where we collectively inhabit. Then in the afternoon of light and adrenaline like this, we are especially the notion of being curses through the body and hurts us. In the days that follow, we are a brand of it all. The images reveal themselves and they are sure enough what has become an extension of me (not the cameras, but this family). Has become a subtle and metaphorical extension of the spaces in which we invisibly move. And even without being able to speak, we say. Without being able to explain, we do.

E eu continuo a rir enquanto me lembrar daquele sorriso.

“let me tell a tale of old times, the crimes that I did, into your heart”

Days without memory IV
It is time already?
I hear drums of war that call me for boarding. So wear the coat again, the one that’s been my company for so long, where I keep the treasures of the days lying here. Their steps become more audible, closer: my two brave jump into the boat and without delay, our feathers get up against the wood to receive the tide

I have pockets full of pomegranates – what magnificent loot...
With my hand over the helm we move away from the coast. Seated in the stern, Susana is still saying farewell to the three sisters that stayed in the orchard; Jorri, with sore arms, looks forward to the waves that are still in nobody’s sight. Miro smiles and keeps looking to port and to starboard delighted with our loot.

And I ... I can not avoid the idiot smile of whom did not take all the cards from the sleeve.
This album also talks about the fears that ultimately are illusions and that fade with time.
My mother says that the fading fears are replaced by others and that throughout life wolves will appear. Some new and others that keep returning.
And I keep laughing as long as I remember that smile.
These were our last days in the lair...
Now is the time to raise the banner of our fits and getting back to sea.
For me, I will make my arms fins and my numb feet, I will make of them memories that are not mine - because if you do not feel the ground shaking beneath your feet it is because it still imprisons you.

Dias sem recordação III

"He woke up at dawn with his ribs pressed against his heart"

Então tornei-me malabarista das coisas insondáveis.

JoaoRui

Days Without Memory III
"He woke up at dawn with his ribs pressed against his heart" I’ve learned, with the drift of years, to not be surprised with the weight of time – that is what the salt of the trails of my lips whispers. But if he was burnt into a smile, the lips are of a different disposition.Do you know the despair of seconds? Have you already guessed the wisdom of time? Certainly, patience is also too rational also for your heart. I used to believe that the tide, my lover, would not bring me but space for me tu push my vessel back to the lightness of the waves. I used to believe that the river would only take me back to me ... But now that the water line laughs some good the years above my mouth and my heart became the end of no river, I understand that in truth, not I’ve really not returned from winter. So, I became a juggler of unfathomable things. And when I think I am back again to the path of return, each step is a trapeze artist over the ropes that I’ve launched from pomegranate tree to pomegranate tree. And is there anything sweeter?

JoaoRui

Days Without memory II
Now that I’m surrounded with pomegranates, even more that salt water, I decided to gather strength to move from where I stood. The excitement of each step is accompanied by a symphony of flavors that comes to me from the first trees of the garden: my two tireless and magnificent warriors were already machinating with a thrust that even I could not have imagined (beautiful and long will be their war bonnets with the countless eagle feathers they are earning here. Just like the old indians used to believe).
It is curious how the taste of pomegranates is so docile in our mouth and here it is wild, restless, fleeting ... he hides in the highest branches and laughs at our moves – So, in the end, it is by seduction and not conquest that he delivers himself to our hands.
If my bones still seek unity, those of my two brave are unaware of such a virtue: there are in this lair, marks of battle and silent wounds.
But it is too early to take them away from here. The blood still boils in the veins of this delirium and the sweat of my hands is not yet ready to deliver himself to him.
I return to the border and I go mute once again.
There, over yonder, in a delayed duet, rises a magnificent mast of strings on the edge of the orchard and the pagan ritual begins once more.
If I still have strength it is not to be a stranger to them.

Who grants them forgiveness?

There is a curious story about Dostoievsky: sentenced to death, already facing the firing squad, the guns loaded and pointed to his blindfold, in the last second he was granted the pardon.

When we began preparing the album, we had twenty-four songs ready to be recorded. After a phase of growth, this group lost nine companions. Through the door of the studio came only fifteen - and each one knew that three would not see the light of day - and none was more perishable or fragile than its similar - and we were pretending that we had overlooked this detail...

And now they stand: blindfold over the tears, before the numb sadness in the antechamber of the guns of our platoon. This part will hurt...

And any of us will turn your eyes to the side when the certainty rips our guts and kills one of our sisters. For now there is no unanimity. But this is a week of details, choices and dropouts.

This part will hurt...

o regresso à casa azul

(Photos by Susana Ribeiro)

Return to the blue house.
After two months of an announced absence, we came back home. It is time for pomegranates, but what we found in the threshold of our door were oranges! Suffice to say that time is sculpting his gifts in our Hesperides Garden;) Inside the house, it’s tidy and there is a new disposition of the instruments in the room by the boys; there’s a new breath, a lot of energy and many dreams sticking to the ceiling, like balloons (lately our lives have been that – inflating dreams!). The desire is to open the door and immediately begin to share, but one has to wait, for some tracks are still being mixed; the work is not yet complete. The weekend was devoted to preparing a small surprise that in time will be revealed. Until then, keep eating oranges :P

Dias sem recordação I

Days without recollection
Speaking of distance is not easy when it is her that she speaks for us. Some days have passed since we’ve reached this sea border. I kept out of the way: I found my roots here: my hands say no, but my body says its bones shattered when my feet touched the firm ground – my eyes are blurry with the weight of gravity.
With my head against the broken keel, I saw my two companions going into the orchard of pomegranates that were outlining smiles as they arrived.
If capturing raw emotions is difficult, not least is the hard work preparing them to leave this place with a high brow, without fearing the falls of the way.
From where I stand, I feel the steps of jorri and Miro strung between trees, fencing the noise of the night; sewing dresses and decorating the stage. It hurts me not to follow them in this part of the quest. With time, one returns to the border of hope and brings me a freshly harvested pomegranate: my teeth receive them with expectation. Does the heart recognize the blood he sent to the fingers and now returns from the heat of the melee? Even with fragments of time carved on the legs and marks of passion on the shoulders? Now he flows in, not to go out again. But the vision is still blurred and the trees have not told everything. At first I always count with the worst, but hope that it will not be so. I inherited from my mother a total disbelief in the human kind, but I'm always waiting to be surprised; it is this hope that rocks the salty water that from time to time comes to visit me near the broken keel.
My Lips are dry from waiting and my mouth overflows with the sweet aroma of pomegranates that I have been offered.

E olhos...

/5 days adrift/ Day 5: The silence of the tide

At last, Lad Ho: it was calling from starboard – yes, because port is the space where the heart breathes: and he lives always turned to the sea, and with his back to certainty.

We return with tired hands and crumpled feet; the hair in a twirl and impregnated with the taste of salt. And eyes… Eyes of who saw too much…

During all this time, it was not the boat that was swinging; I found it hearing the shiver of the sand when we approached and seeing the way she convulsed when the keel split her smoothest grains apart. It was at this time, with the violence of the crash, that the three of us were projected to the bottom of the ship.

What bottom? What vessel? Was this but a dream?

Is it the silence of the tide, again shrinking beneath the skin? Is she waiting new company?

One day, when I forget all of this; when time has shaped the tumult of my breathing once again; when these visions have vanished in the wrinkles of my fingers and I turned into a stranger in front of my mirror… Then I will have returned to the arms of my submerged stare.

But for now, whilst the pulsation of each note is more audible then the sound of my blood crashing against the wall of my chest, I am at one with each one of them.

These songs are mothers and daughters of emotions: some are as old as my heart and others are as old as its cracks.

When I go away, you'll come back for more"

Dia 33: / 5 dias à deriva / Dia 4: O Brasido do Inverno

/5 days adrift/ Day 3: Winter’s ember

In most cases, we do not miss wings, much less the ground under our feet - we have enough of that to spare. The lack is only of propulsion space: then, instead of wings, we only have feathers and the dreams we lose.

Today we were more than three sailing the drunken boa. With bloody eyes, and fingers carved on the feet of the orchids born in silence, we faced the ice where the genesis of the melody crystallized. We had already chased her until we cornered her between the wounds of our fingers and the whip of the strings that couldn’t hold the tension. Now, we charge again and again, until nothing separates us - and it is only then that the tape reaps the scars and secrets that have been dragging their feet in the shade of the intense light
As the night fell, I felt steps outside the door of the studio: The stranger, with a hard brow and the skin burnt from the sun. He brought a story, dragging her by her hair and landed her by my feet. And I, who in this, am just a reflection of the voice, I sat me down and the end of the room, watching this the strange spectacle: He carved his teeth on the back of winter ...
But today we were not alone in this vessel. The chorus, drunk as well, was hiding for several days between the foam of the waves – he waited until the last breath, and then stormed the boat…

Pirates… What a sweet vigil.
